Black Bitten

One night in late July 1995 I woke up at three a.m. and went into my kitchen and sat down to write this poem:

Sometimes when it's night and hot

the spider bites

the skin snaps

the blood spills

the moon explodes

the night dies and the end comes up

over the hills...

Then I went back to bed to sleep until late in the afternoon. I was awakened by a phone call, it was my step mother. She said my father, who had been diagnosed with brain cancer a year prior, had died that morning...true story.
